This week's prompt is query tip. Querying is HARD and writing a query letter is a totally different skill than novel writing. My advice is to keep it short, sweet, and specific. Swipe to see two examples of my queries for BLOOD LIKE ROSES. First up is an early version, which isn't bad (but also isn't great). Next, you have the final version, which I revised after my agent one on one at Tin House. It's shorter, snappier, and MUCH more specific (and had a fabulous request rate!) And it led to me leaving the query trenches and signing with my agent!

Book Review: FOR THE WOLF by @hwhittenwrites

I LOVED this book so much. I admit I was a little terrified going in, because the book I have out on submission also has sisters, creepy woods, wolves, and blood and plant magic. I love ALL of those elements so much, and I didn't want to read a book and think: why do I even bother?! But I also cannot resist a book about sisters, creepy woods, and magic, and I am SO glad @orbitbooks_us approved me for a digital arc on Netgalley. I've raved about it to my writing group, my mom friends at the playground, and to the English Department at our end of year meetings (and ordered a copy for the upper school library).

I loved this story about fierce-hearted Red and her self-sacrificing Wolf, about the lush and deadly Wilderwood that has dug deep roots into them both and refuses to let go. The atmosphere, the secondary characters, THE MAGIC. It's completely enchanting and chilling and lovely and I am already dying to read FOR THE THRONE. It's the type of book that makes me want to be a better writer, and I am so so thrilled my preorder finally arrived so I can read it all over again! This book is perfect for fans of Naomi Novik and anyone who (like me) loved books like Green Rider and Crown Duel!

This week's theme is #writingadvice. I've been around long enough to know that so much advice is subjective (like so much else in this industry) and the magic answer for almost everything is: "it depends." But I think the ONE thing I would tell new writers is this: other writers are your colleagues, not your competition. There is ALWAYS going to be someone ahead of you on this journey. Someone will finish a draft first, query first, find an agent first. Sell their book first, have glowing trade reviews, win that award, hit the bestseller lists. If you view someone else's achievements as a loss or failing on your part, the only thing you'll do is make yourself miserable.

So make friends who are in the same place you are. Make friends who are ahead of you. And make friends with writers just starting out, and cheer on each and every win as if it were your own. Because their win isn't your loss. It says nothing about you, or your book, or your talent. I promise.
