Today's #authorlifemonth prompt is non-bookish hobby. I started embroidering last year when Eric was on his Guggenheim fellowship at the Smithsonian to give myself something to do that wasn't on a screen. I'm still really slow and not very good but I enjoy it...and just like writing happens one word at a time, it gets done one little stitch at a time ☺️

Today's #authorlifemonth prompt is dream writing retreat. Honestly, going ANYWHERE to write right now feels like a dream. But there are days I miss our little apartment in Opfingen and the long walks through the vineyards with the Black Forest in the distance. I was so busy with grad school while we were there the first time (and with an infant the second time) that I didn't have much time to write, but I spent a lot of time dreaming up the story that would become BLOOD LIKE ROSES.

The good news about being married to a modern German military historian is that we will be going back to Freiburg at some point because that's where the German military archive is located and research will beckon. But until then, I'll dream of writing away on that tiny balcony (and in this dream I send Ellie downstairs to play with her Oma Anita, aka Eric's host mother who we adore) 🥀

Day 14 of #authorlifemonth: missions accomplished. So much of this feels like a lifetime ago and I've spent a lot of this year feeling out of my depth. It's pretty amazing to actually write out the things I've done...and it made me realize that I am right where I need to be. 🖤

If there is anything I've learned since I started this journey, it's that so much (almost everything, really) is out of my control. I can't control who connects with my words. How they react. If my books will sell or how they're reviewed or really ANYTHING beyond putting them on the page.

All I can do is write and breathe and hope. And then sit down and write some more. 🌿

I still have a stash of bookmarks from A MAGIC DARK AND BRIGHT, but my favorite bit of swag ever was the replica of Marin's poison ring that I gave away on launch day as part of a pre-order raffle. Six years later and I'm still a little sad I didn't keep one for myself!
